Good morning, Provo. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 9th of October.

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A mile-long section of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail in Provo will be closed for about a month starting on Wednesday as crews clear wildfire debris from the Buckley Draw Fire burn scar. City officials said heavy equipment will restore the channel’s capacity to lower future flooding risks—keeping the area safe during cleanup.  Deseret News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday the Legislature said they will appeal a court ruling that forced new congressional maps. The GOP insists it must have the final say in redistricting and plans to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to review the decision — a clear fight over power in government.  Deseret News
  • Plaintiffs filed a lawsuit on Monday challenging the Legislature’s redistricting bill and submitted new maps for review—arguing the new standards weaken Proposition 4’s ban on partisan gerrymandering. Both sides will submit briefs by Oct. 17 and attend a hearing on Oct. 23-24, with a final map to be chosen by Nov. 10—aiming to reduce municipal and county splits.  Deseret News
  • Former Gov. Gary Herbert said the government shutdown is hurting Utah families today by delaying pay and reducing essential services (including WIC and national parks funding), with lawmakers set to face tough redistricting decisions (which could spark legal challenges) in coming days.  KUTV
  • State Rep. Tyler Clancy and Rep. Mike Kennedy spoke at the Know Poverty Summit in Provo on Oct. 8 about new ways to help families become self-sufficient using local non-profits — they said that better work, education, and support can overcome the benefits cliff without expanding traditional welfare programs.  Deseret News
