CULTURE NEWS

  • After President Russell M. Nelson died Saturday night, the church entered an apostolic interregnum as the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles led by President Oaks now runs church affairs. A new prophet is expected to be set apart after Nelson’s funeral on Tuesday Oct 7 — a tradition that marks a leadership change.  Deseret News
  • General conference this weekend is unique because the Twelve Apostles are leading the sessions after President Nelson died on Sept. 27 — President Dallin H. Oaks now presides, marking the first time since 1951 that the quorum has led. Saturday’s sessions were held at 10 a.m., 2 p.m., and 6 p.m. while today’s sessions begin at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.  Deseret News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A Buckley Institute study found college students are divided on support for socialism and capitalism, and BYU students and professors offered their views—many citing free speech and mental health concerns. The study revealed differences between liberal and conservative students and highlighted debates over acceptable political actions—prompting calls for more open dialogue.  Deseret News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Utah Legislature will meet Monday in a special session called by Gov. Spencer Cox to set new congressional district boundaries and update redistricting rules — lawmakers will also review proposals on judicial reform, water management, and rural health funding amid ongoing legal debates.  Daily Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • BYU beat West Virginia 38 to 24 on Oct. 4 at LaVell Edwards Stadium in front of nearly 64,000 fans, but players and coaches said they must play cleaner as tougher opponents come up later this month—head coach Kalani Sitake stressed that wins will only count if turnovers are minimized.  Deseret News
