CRIME NEWS

  • Utah Valley University had weak safety measures when conservative leader Charlie Kirk was assassinated on Sept. 10 as only six officers and no drone watched the outdoor debate event—experts say that lack of modern tools left him exposed to a sniper.  KUTV

CULTURE NEWS

  • BYU professor Mary Jane Woodger said Russell M. Nelson changed church practices by shortening Sunday meetings and replacing home teaching with ministering—he made members feel heard and empowered women while stressing the importance of temples. Woodger added that his legacy shaped religious education and the church will soon reorganize its leadership after his funeral.  Standard-Examiner

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rep. Cory Malloy of Lehi renewed his push to end the sales tax on prescription glasses and contacts—items that most medical purchases do not pay tax on. Local optometrist Dr. Mark Taylor said the extra 7% adds hundreds to each purchase, and Malloy will seek budget cuts in the upcoming legislative session to support the change.  KUTV
  • Governor Spencer J. Cox ordered flags be flown at half-staff on state facilities to honor Russell M. Nelson; the flags will be lowered at sunrise on Oct. 7 and raised at sunset, and all private groups are invited to join the tribute—ensuring a respectful statewide recognition.  Standard-Examiner

SPORTS NEWS

  • University of Colorado was fined $50,000 and reprimanded by the Big 12 for inappropriate chants—using expletives and religious slurs—that targeted BYU football players during their game at Folsom Field on Saturday, Sept. 27, and university leaders apologized for the incident.  FOX 13
  • The International Olympic Committee is reviewing its sponsorship program and a system for rotating Olympic hosts as its working groups look at changes that may bring more sponsor revenue and stability for Utah's 2034 Winter Games—Gene Sykes and others from the Olympic committees discussed updating sponsorships and evaluating host rotation. The recommendations from these groups could boost revenue strategies and influence how future Olympic events are managed.  Deseret News
