Good morning, Provo. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 17th of July.

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A study by Metro Analytics found that Utah Transit Authority services boosted the economy by creating 79,000 jobs and saving households $717 million in travel and maintenance costs. Further investment will raise returns from $5.11 to $6.08 per dollar and add billions in economic value by 2050—demonstrating strong support for Utah’s economic growth.  ABC4

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Wildfires are burning across Utah, with the Monroe Canyon Fire in Sevier and Piute counties covering 8,646 acres and causing evacuations, while other fires in Sevier, Grand, San Juan, Garfield, Tooele and Washington counties range from 114 to 15,676 acres with varying containment levels — officials are monitoring the situation closely.  FOX 13
  • Brigham Young University researchers restarted their wildflower project at Rock Canyon Trailhead to reduce wildfire risk by removing invasive wheatgrass and replanting native seeds gathered by students. The 20-year study now shows native plants staying green longer—helping lower fire hazards and may spur seed companies to boost production.  Daily Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Spencer Cox said state officials blocked a Chinese state-owned company plus tied to AVIC from buying land near the Provo Airport on Tuesday in Palmyra due to national security concerns. County recorders and the Department of Public Safety acted quickly, and new state laws restrict foreign land purchases to protect local strategic assets.  Standard-Examiner

HEALTH NEWS

  • Utah Valley University and the Bingham Foundation are partnering to open the Bingham Family Clinic on the West Campus—this free clinic will offer primary care, speciality appointments, dental hygiene and an on-site pharmacy to uninsured residents while giving students hands-on training—and it is expected to begin serving patients this winter.  Deseret News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Olympus High linebacker Adam Bywater committed to BYU on Monday via social media and the 3-star recruit chose the Cougars over offers from Boise State, Arizona State and Utah. He is the younger brother of Ben + a former BYU defender who retired after a shoulder injury.  Deseret News
  • BYU head coach Kalani Sitake’s program posted a 48 to 16 record in seasons when its starting quarterback was announced only after fall camp—resulting in better outcomes than when an early starter was named.
