ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Last week, Tiffinie Wolf got stuck under Trestle Bridge on the Provo River while paddleboarding with her daughter and was rescued by DNR ranger Wyatt Manis and bystanders who helped keep her safe; local officials urged water users to wear life jackets and avoid using tether straps—recommending they exit at the pull-out area ahead of the bridge.  ABC4

CRIME NEWS

  • Utah law enforcement seized 4.3 million units of fentanyl by early 2025—over 92% of last year’s total—as overdose deaths dropped by 1.5%, the Fentanyl Task Force reported Monday on Capitol steps. The task force also announced a pending prosecution under a new law that makes trafficking over 100 grams of fentanyl a first-degree felony to protect communities.  Deseret News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Utah’s final Sundance Film Festival will run Jan. 22—Feb. 1 with screenings in Park City and Salt Lake City and special events celebrating 40 years of independent cinema and Robert Redford’s legacy. The event marks the end of an era as longtime venues like the Egyptian Theatre are not included while the festival will move to Boulder next year, and local officials remain confident that Utah’s film industry will continue to thrive.  Deseret News

  • Utah hikers are advised to keep at least 150 feet away from mountain goats on trails such as Mount Timpanogos—Wildlife Resources warns that nannies with kids in summer and males during rut may act aggressively—so travelers should back away and keep dogs leashed to stay safe.  Deseret News

  • Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said state officials blocked a Chinese-owned corporation from buying land near Provo Airport over national security concerns—an action that followed new laws aimed at limiting foreign influence on local infrastructure.  Deseret News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Experts warn that Utah’s shortage of primary care doctors and nurses—shown by nearly 3,000 open nursing positions and many physicians nearing retirement—could put patient care at risk as demand grows with the state’s expanding population.  Deseret News
