CULTURE NEWS

  • Utahn Olivia Favero won Miss Rodeo America on Sunday, Dec. 7 in Las Vegas — the seventh win for Utah — and became a national ambassador for rodeo culture. She will travel over 40,000 miles and attend nearly 100 rodeo events next year to educate communities on Western traditions.  Deseret News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • In Utah, gas prices are around $2.80 per gallon while national averages hit four-year lows as seasonal changes and increased supply drive lower costs. GasBuddy forecasts further drops by Christmas, offering drivers extra savings for holiday travel.  Deseret News
  • A new report from the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute shows Utah farms generated $2.3 billion in sales in 2022, with seven counties responsible for 70% of the state’s sales. The report noted rising costs and an aging workforce as growing challenges for agriculture.  Deseret News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Utah law now requires insurance companies to use a state wildfire risk map beginning Jan. 1 to assess high-risk areas; the rule is not expected to automatically raise rates but will give homeowners clearer reasons for any changes + offer tips to lower risk.  KUTV

HEALTH NEWS

  • To prevent Christmas tree fires, the American Red Cross of Utah advised residents to choose a fresh tree, water it, and position it at least three feet from heat sources — tips shown on Dec. 8. The guidance warns that dry trees and lights can cause fires during the holidays.  Standard-Examiner

SPORTS NEWS

  • WSU men lost a 90 — 74 game to Utah Valley on Wednesday in Orem after Edwin Suarez Jr. reached a career-best 26 points and 10 rebounds. The WSU women also won 84 — 47 at home over La Sierra.  Standard-Examiner
