COMMUNITY NEWS

  • In response to news of an antisemitic terrorist attack on a Jewish community in Australia on Sunday, Utah’s Jewish Federation of Utah is working with local law enforcement (and Gov. Spencer Cox) to enhance security for upcoming Hanukkah celebrations, ensuring events remain safe for all.  Deseret News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Utah researchers discovered a new roundworm species called Diplolaimelloides woaabi in Great Salt Lake; it was named for the native Shoshone word (worm) and may serve as a bioindicator of ecological change, the study published last month said.  Deseret News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Former BYU football greats Tom Holmoe and Jim Herrmann have volunteered for a University of Utah study on infrared light therapy (photobiomodulation) to help heal brain injuries; study results are expected to be publicized in late January or February.  Deseret News

  • Cole West announced it has purchased the abandoned Park Plaza apartments at 910 N. 900 E. to redevelop the site as BYU student housing with demolition planned once city and court approvals are secured - the property sits adjacent to campus.  Deseret News

  • Local college football remains energized as bowl season continues despite nationwide opt-outs. In Provo, BYU boosted team support with coach Kalani Sitake's contract extension while other Utah schools confirmed bowl games in December and beyond — sparking local pride.  Deseret News
  • Morgan Scalley, a longtime Utah Man and former defensive coordinator, has been named Utah’s 24th head coach after Kyle Whittingham stepped down after 21 seasons. He will officially assume the role after Dec. 31’s Las Vegas Bowl — bringing his local experience to the Utes football program.  Deseret News
