ECONOMY NEWS

  • Rocky Mountain Power is proposing a 4.48% rate increase for its customers to fund a self-insurance fire account for catastrophic wildfires—this change could add about $3.70 a month for the average residential customer. The Public Service Commission will hold a virtual conference Thursday to review the proposal and its potential impact over the next decade.  Standard-Examiner

  • Snow is returning to the mountains and state and local groups mark Avalanche Awareness Week to warn winter sports enthusiasts about risks near Ben Lomond and Snowbasin—Utah Avalanche Center holds The Mindset Shift event today while Ogden Avalanche will host its Backcountry Bash fundraiser on Thursday from 6-10 p.m. at The Monarch to provide free education and important safety updates.   Standard-Examiner

SPORTS NEWS

  • BYU fans planning to attend the Big 12 championship game will benefit from extra nonstop flights as Breeze Airways announced additional service from Provo Airport to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport on Friday and Sunday—offering a convenient option for game travel.  Deseret News
  • BYU coach Kalani Sitake said that if his team loses Saturday against Texas Tech, both teams should be in the College Football Playoff—Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark and Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire agreed, with Yormark even suggesting that Utah deserves strong consideration. Sitake also brushed off rumors about a Penn State coaching job and told his team to focus on winning the game.  Deseret News
  • Weber State is searching for a new head football coach after firing Mickey Mental when the team posted a 2 to 10 record, and officials face challenges with salary gaps, tight hiring timelines, and attracting candidates with strong local ties (such as Nick Howell, who has deep Utah connections).  Standard-Examiner
  • Four Utah women's volleyball teams will start in the NCAA tournament on Thursday as BYU, the highest rated at 22-8, plays Cal Poly at 6:00 p.m. MST and Utah State, Utah and Utah Valley face other seeded teams with games streamed on ESPN.  Standard-Examiner
