Good morning, Provo. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 6th of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Provo food pantry extended its hours and served over 300 families after many lost their SNAP benefits amid the government shutdown. The pantry is open Monday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.—providing a vital resource to residents facing tough economic times.  FOX 13
  • BYU fans have raised over $63,000 on GoFundMe for injured Red Raiders fan Maddie Ortiz & her husband, Texas Tech’s team barber, after a severe auto accident led to long hospital stays and financial stress that pushed the fundraiser far beyond its $25,000 goal.  Deseret News

CRIME NEWS

  • Utah Valley University in Orem is expanding its police force by hiring eight officers and two security managers after conservative activist Charlie Kirk was fatally shot during an on-campus debate on Sept. 10—officials said the new hires will boost security for future events amid past criticism over low staffing ratios.  KUTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dr. Ben Carson spoke yesterday at UVU in Orem, urging unity and calm after the recent killing of Charlie Kirk, and he shared his journey from early struggles to becoming a renowned neurosurgeon and former HUD secretary—stressing that open dialogue and prayer can heal our community.  Deseret News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • BYU researchers said that large wildfires can help forests regrow when fire-adapted trees recover after fires—challenging the long-time suppression strategy linked to Smokey Bear. They studied the 2019 Pole Creek fire and noted that drought and fuel buildup across Utah have increased the risk of megafires.  FOX 13

SPORTS NEWS

  • Utah's 15 ski resorts spent nearly $600 million on upgrades, but warm weather and low snowfall have forced Brian Head Resort to delay its opening from Friday to November 14 (weather permitting). Other resorts plan to open later in November and December while transit service to some canyons will resume on November 23 if conditions are right.  Deseret News
  • BYU was ranked No.7 in the initial College Football Playoff rankings released Tuesday on ESPN, marking its highest start ever while Texas Tech was No.8 and Utah came in at No.13. If the rankings held, BYU would host Notre Dame in Provo and the Big 12’s playoff hopes would depend on upcoming weekend games — a sign that future contests will determine final paths — as teams remain in contention.  Deseret News
  • BYU beat Villanova 71-66 in their season opener at T-Mobile Arena on Nov. 3 after losing a 14-point lead—AJ Dybantsa scored 21 points as coach Kevin Young said the win showed the team's stronger defense and set them up to work on rebounding. This victory marks a promising start for the Cougars as they continue to build their season.  Deseret News
