COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Parents of missionaries in Jamaica for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are waiting for news after Hurricane Melissa struck on Wednesday—damaging communications and cutting off power. Provo resident Kyle Fuller said his son is safe—although many are still unable to contact their loved ones as recovery efforts begin.  FOX 13

CULTURE NEWS

  • Younger Japanese Americans are asking older relatives about their experiences at Topaz Internment Camp, a key part of Utah’s past during World War II. Professor Ono and others say sharing these stories helps everyone understand how the internment still affects many families today.  KUTV
  • Jon Heder, known from Napoleon Dynamite, stars in I See the Demon—a sci-fi horror film shot in Provo over 10 days near BYU that premiered at Cinequest and won awards at Grimmfest, and it will release domestically soon with Mallory Everton in the cast.  Deseret News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Provo Mayor Michelle Kaufusi said she will work to remove invasive carp from Utah Lake by the opening ceremonies of the 2034 Winter Olympics—she called on federal, state, county and local agencies, universities, nonprofits and businesses to build state capacity using tools like boats and nets as part of an effort that began in 2009.  Daily Herald
  • Utah will commit up to $4 million to support food banks amid the government shutdown as the Legislature approved an initial payment of $500,000 and will fund weekly installments until normal operations resume. Gov. Cox, Senate President Adams & House Speaker Schultz said the funds will help all Utahns, including federal workers and rural families, keep food on the table.  Standard-Examiner

  • The Utah County Health Department confirmed one measles case on Friday morning and is investigating to stop further spread — urging residents to update their MMR vaccinations and follow isolation guidance.  KUTV
