ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Utah officials are investigating human-caused wildfires after a season that burned more than 160,000 acres and destroyed many structures—teams including law enforcement are examining costly events like the Monroe Canyon Fire that burned over 73,000 acres and cost more than $100 million in suppression expenses.  KUTV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State funding cuts have hurt The Refuge Utah in Orem, which kept 25 shelter beds while receiving over 450 requests, —lawmakers are probing the budget gap as the center plans to seek more private funds.  KUTV

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Monday, Oct. 27, Lauri Markkanen scored a career-high 51 points to lead the Utah Jazz to a 138-134 win over the Phoenix Suns. He made two free throws with 1.9 seconds left in overtime—making him the first Jazz player to score over 50 in a regular-season game since Karl Malone in 1998.  Standard-Examiner
  • At a Team USA Media Summit in New York City Tuesday, U.S. Olympic officials said Utah’s organizing committee is reviewing plans to push boundaries by adding events such as cross-country races and cyclocross to the 2034 Winter Games (using venues from 2002 and a $4 billion budget). Officials said the changes could broaden participation and boost revenue, with final plans pending recommendations from an IOC working group (studying potential event changes).  Deseret News
  • Morgan High girls volleyball was swept in three sets by undefeated North Sanpete at the UCCU Center in Orem on October 28—North Sanpete won by scores of 25 to 13, 25 to 23, and 25 to 17 to earn its first state title since 2009.  Standard-Examiner
