Good morning, Provo. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 22nd of October.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students at UVU gathered Tuesday in the campus courtyard to protest a planned memorial for Charlie Kirk, arguing that a physical monument may become divisive and a target for vandalism—further, a separate petition in support collected over 21,000 signatures while the opposing group gathered more than 15,000. The university’s memorial committee has invited community input online as the debate continues.  FOX 13
  • Utah lawmakers and higher education leaders provided mixed opinions on HB265 — a measure that redirected funds from administrative costs to classroom instruction and changed staffing and course offerings at public colleges. Proponents claim the bill has improved efficiency and lowered student debt, while critics say cuts to humanities and rural programs have harmed education quality.  Deseret News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A court filing from the Department of the Interior shows nearly 100 BLM employees in Utah will be laid off, which may delay visitor services and emergency response at public lands like the Red Cliffs Conservation Area (a place known for its hiking trails, dinosaur tracks, and native wildlife). The move comes as officials review the agency’s workforce for redundancies and efficiency.  KUTV

SPORTS NEWS

  • BYU Athletics partnered with entrepreneur Jon Cheney’s company, GenAIPI, to train student athletes on using AI as part of the Built4Life program (an initiative for career skills). Cheney said his startup, valued at $10 million (after rapid growth since it began at his home earlier this year), will help guide athletes for future success.  KUTV
