CRIME NEWS

  • Utah had 361 job scam reports per million residents in 2024, placing the state among the top five as FTC data showed a 300% rise from last year. Officials urge caution with offers that promise high earnings for little work and demand upfront payments—common signs of a scam.  KUTV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Utah filmmaker Jared Hess announced he will direct a sequel to A Minecraft Movie scheduled for release July 23 and noted on Instagram that the original film, which became the No. 2 highest-grossing movie this year, thanks fans for their support—promising a film that expands the Minecraft world with new characters and settings.  Deseret News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • BYU board of trustees approved plans to tear down the 63-year-old ASB at the end of this year—its seismic, mechanical and electrical issues have made the building unsafe—and build a new administration building slated for fall completion in 2028. Staff and departments have already begun moving to BYU East this summer.  Daily Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • Utah’s head coach Kyle Whittingham said he will focus on his team—leaving little commentary on BYU—as he noted both teams share similar stats ahead of Saturday’s game in Provo. The rivalry game will affect Big 12 title hopes and marks another chapter in the long history between the teams.  Deseret News
  • BYU overcame a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter to win 33-27 in double overtime against Arizona in Tucson on Saturday — the Cougars rallied with strong plays from freshman quarterback Bear Bachmeier and receiver Parker Kingston.  Deseret News
  • BYU is one of four schools to land spots in both the AP Top 25 football rankings and the Division I men’s basketball preseason poll. A double-overtime win over Arizona moved the football team to a 6—0 record and No.15, while the Cougars hold a No.8 ranking in basketball and will host an exhibition on Oct 24 before the season opener on Nov 3.  Standard-Examiner
