CULTURE NEWS

  • Salt Lake Film Society will present 'Redford Remembered,' a film retrospective that will screen 12 of Robert Redford's acclaimed movies at Broadway Centre Cinemas from Nov. 2 through Nov. 27. The tribute follows his passing at his Sundance retreat near Provo on Sept. 18—local leaders and festival officials praised his lasting impact on independent film and conservation.  Deseret News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Utah System of Higher Education announced record completions this academic year with 61,265 graduates and 71,262 certificates—up 26% since 2021—to meet local workforce needs in fields such as nursing, business and computer science.  Deseret News
  • Utah State University Extension leads the Wasatch Back Fruit Tree Project that uses DNA testing to show homeowners which apple trees can survive Utah's harsh climate. The program offers free guidance — available in nearly every county — so people can plant trees that grow well and give good fruit.  KUTV
  • Brigham Young University has approved plans to replace its 64-year-old Abraham O. Smoot Building with a new administration facility that will start construction after the current building is demolished at the end of 2025 (housing offices such as admissions, registration, and housing) and is expected to open in fall 2028 (improving student services).  Deseret News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement dropped the deportation case against John Shin, a 37-year-old Utah-raised violinist detained in August on a work trip in Colorado after he cleared a $25,000 bond. His case ends a major legal challenge that had drawn support from the local music community.  KUTV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Researchers from the University of Utah’s Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute found veterans face long wait times and fear of stigma when seeking mental health and suicide prevention help — the Utah Department of Veterans and Military Affairs uses the report to guide plans to build trust and cut barriers.  Daily Herald
