Good morning, Provo. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 3rd of October.
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A wildfire broke out in Hobble Creek Canyon on Thursday — it burned 150 acres and forced evacuations from Hobble Creek to Springville Crossing while crews from Mapleton Fire, State Fire and Utah County Fire Department worked to clear roads. FOX 13
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Utah residents can enjoy fall with festivals, pumpkin patches, haunted houses and concerts running through early November — including local festivities in Provo like a Día de los Muertos celebration at Covey Center for the Arts. Events from Witchfest to 'The Pumpkin Train' offer fun ways to celebrate the season statewide. Deseret News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Utah Board of Higher Education approved a new task force today to review campus security measures at universities—team members include security professionals, law enforcement experts, administrators, and student and faculty representatives who will recommend new policies. The decision comes after a fatal shooting at Utah Valley University exposed gaps in existing safety protocols and calls for enhanced public safety measures. KUTV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Utah Supreme Court approved a new way for law school grads to become lawyers without taking the bar exam. Starting next year, the option requires 240 hours of legal practice under a qualified lawyer — including 50 hours of pro bono work — and has drawn national attention for lowering bar prep costs. Deseret News
- ➤ Utah County will run its winter homeless warming center from one central location at the red building—2855 S. State Street—rather than using three venues, with services provided from November 17 until March 3 to cover the cold months and enhanced security measures. The plan also expands support to help people exit homelessness by offering job training, detox, mental health care, and housing placement services. Deseret News
- ➤ A construction project to restore the viaduct on University Avenue began Wednesday as UDOT crews started prep work, and traffic impacts will begin in late October when demolition on the bridge’s west side starts; the new design will add two lanes in each direction, bike lanes—wider sidewalks and safer crossings for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists. Deseret News
- ➤ Union officials say nearly 34,000 federal workers in Utah risk losing their pay if the government shutdown continues. Workers at Hill Air Force Base worry about job cuts and financial struggles — they urge political leaders to act soon. FOX 13
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Today, a report by the Utah Women and Leadership Project shows that Utah's fertility rate has dropped 45.5% over 50 years and that women now marry at 25.2 years old while divorce rates have more than tripled since 1970—raising concerns about family affordability and the need for supportive policies. Community leaders will use these findings to review child care and housing challenges that affect family life. Deseret News
- ➤ After lawmakers failed to pass a funding measure, the government shut down and cancer advocates warned that up to 350,000 Utahns buying insurance may lose tax credits needed to pay for care. They said if Congress does not act soon, cancer patients might lose access to essential screenings and treatments—raising serious concerns for future health. KUTV
LIFESTYLE NEWS
