BUSINESS NEWS

  • Utah has seen six Starbucks stores close over the weekend, including one in Provo, as part of the company's plan that cut nearly 1,000 jobs. Affected employees will be notified this week—some will get transfer options while others receive severance packages.  FOX 13

CRIME NEWS

  • A deadly shooting at a church in Grand Blanc, Michigan that left five dead has sparked calls for improved security at Utah worship places—local expert Luis Rudisell recommends using trained volunteers and adding physical barriers. He noted many congregations already have members with law enforcement or military backgrounds to help support safety plans.  KUTV

CULTURE NEWS

  • President Russell M. Nelson died on September 28 and local, national, and international leaders expressed deep gratitude for his service in building bridges across faith and cultures—officials, sports figures, and religious leaders alike remembered his lasting impact on healthcare and temple building.   • Rising tuition costs and the spread of AI push many young adults to choose skilled trades over college—surveys show over 57% of Gen Z worry about student loan debt while Utah trade jobs, tracked since 2015, have recently flattened. HEALTH NEWS

  • A Utah resident died after eating ready-to-eat pasta meals linked to a nationwide listeria outbreak that has caused 20 illnesses and four deaths. The Utah Department of Agriculture and Food warned consumers Monday to check their refrigerators and discard items — including Marketside linguine with beef meatballs and Trader Joe’s Cajun-style pasta — with 'best if used by' dates near expiring, and advised those with symptoms to seek medical care.  Deseret News
  • Utah pharmacists can now give the 2025-2026 COVID shot to eligible people without a prescription—this rule applies to older adults and those with specific health conditions and will end when the CDC updates ACIP’s guidelines.  Deseret News

SPORTS NEWS

  • The University of Colorado Boulder issued a statement on September 29 that condemned the expletives and religious slurs—such as the phrase 'expletive BYU'—used by some fans during BYU’s 24-21 win over Colorado in Boulder. BYU Athletics and Sen. Mike Lee also criticized the chants that targeted Latter-day Saint fans and urged respect at away games.  Deseret News
  • At media day on Sept 29, the Utah Jazz said that young players and veterans must earn minutes as the team sets a clear merit-based system for play. Coach Hardy explained that each player will compete for time on the court—helping the team balance fresh talent with experienced guidance this season.  Deseret News
