ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Canyon View Junior High student suffered a severe self-inflicted gunshot wound during a class field trip in Provo Canyon-South Fork area - the student was taken to the hospital while school officials provided counseling services to other students.  FOX 13

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Robert and Lo—Mari O’Brien funded the Charlie Kirk Memorial Scholarship through the Washington Crossing Foundation in memory of the conservative activist who was assassinated on Sept. 10 at Utah Valley University. The scholarship gives special consideration to Utah high school seniors who have shown strong moral values—aiming to honor Kirk’s legacy and support future leaders.  Deseret News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Governor Spencer Cox announced a new public-private mission—GSL 2034—to protect the Great Salt Lake ahead of the 2034 Winter Olympics as water levels fall below healthy thresholds. Ducks Unlimited already pledged half of a $200 million donation while local business leaders will raise the remaining funds to support solutions.  Deseret News

FINANCE NEWS

  • Dave Nellis at American First Credit Union said home equity loans may help borrowers consolidate high-interest credit card debt, which reached $1.21 trillion in Q2, by offering lower rates around 8% in Utah while cautioning that changing spending habits is also needed.  FOX 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Representative Ken Ivory said a new law passed earlier this year gives Highway Patrol stiffer penalties for unsecured loads by upgrading violations to misdemeanors and fines—this measure aims to reduce dangerous debris that has led to accidents, and an education campaign is planned to help drivers secure their loads.  KUTV
  • Gov. Spencer Cox told Olympic officials yesterday at Little America that Utah will show its strength by hosting the 2034 Winter Games after reflecting on recent tragedies and the state's resilience. Leaders announced a celebration on Nov. 24 that will mark 3,000 days until the Games — plans include expanding the workforce to 50,000 by then — as preparations for a global event continue.  Deseret News
  • Today, the legislative redistricting committee showed five map options that meet Prop. 4 standards—Rep. Candice Pierucci said lawmakers legally cannot choose a map made by the independent commission and may appeal the court order to the U.S. Supreme Court.  KUTV

  • 21-year-old Lincoln Knowles free soloed Squawstruck in Rock Canyon this summer, climbing the 1900-foot route in just over four hours and drawing praise from top climbers—he left the University of Utah to focus on his climbing career.   • BYU football coach Kalani Sitake said Monday that the Cougars must play with greater discipline after a game marked by 10 penalties and a tweet hinting at signal-stealing. The team will face a changed Colorado squad Saturday at 8:15 p.m. MDT—Sitake stressed that improved substitutions and clean play will be key.  Deseret News
