COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Utah Valley University formed a committee to create a memorial after the campus shooting that killed political activist Charlie Kirk, with co-chairs Scott M. Smith and Amanda Covington and members including students, political leaders, and key community stakeholders — the group will work with local and state officials and Kirk’s family to design a respectful tribute.  KUTV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A family in Provo lost more than 40 farm animals when a corral fire broke out at 7:30 a.m. Friday—some animals were burned or had to be put down, and the fire department is checking solar power batteries as a possible cause.  FOX 13

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A WalletHub study shows Utah students have the lowest student loan debt in the country, and local colleges use three year degree programs to help lower costs—only Hawaii carries less debt while Mississippi tops the list.  Deseret News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • After heavy rain on Monday, mudslides in a Provo neighborhood damaged property near a church and closed roads, while concrete barriers helped protect nearby buildings. City workers extended a temporary berm and are building a new debris channel—set to finish in about six weeks—as cleanup continues and residents brace for more storms.  KUTV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Utah lawmakers unveiled five proposals to redraw the state's congressional map ahead of next midterm elections, a move that could create a new competitive seat by splitting Salt Lake City. A redistricting commission will review the proposals until Thursday and the legislature will vote during a special session in early October — the public may comment from Sept 25 to Oct 5.  Deseret News
  • Lawmakers at the Legislative Redistricting Committee meeting on Monday introduced legislation to limit the standards for testing congressional maps for partisan symmetry and reviewed five proposed districts after a court voided past maps—experts said Salt Lake County must be split to meet population targets. The committee will meet again on Wednesday at 11 a.m. and present a final map on Thursday, Sept 25, with public comments running until Oct 5 and a special voting session on Oct 6.  Deseret News

  • BYU Cougars stayed undefeated after they beat the East Carolina Pirates 34-13 on September 20 at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium — freshman Bear Bachmeier threw for 246 yards and a touchdown while LJ Martin ran over 100 yards.  Deseret News
