CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Members of the Utah Valley Woodcarvers Club meet twice a week at Treeline in Provo to learn basic carving cuts—pull, push, and stop—and work on individual projects with support from one another. The club will host its annual woodcarving show on Sept. 19-20 where over 100 pieces will be displayed and a longtime member will be honored. Deseret News
- ➤ Three actors from Happy Days — Anson Williams, Donny Most, and Henry Winkler — will visit Salt Lake City for FanX this month. They will join a Q&A panel and sign autographs at the Salt Palace Convention Center from Sept. 25 through Sept. 27. Deseret News

- ➤ Governor Spencer Cox delivered a video message to students on Monday urging them to spend less time online and more time engaging in community service—he said everyone deserves dignity and respectful conversation. He added that real-life experiences can help counter online anger and build unity after last week’s tragic event at Utah Valley University. Deseret News
- ➤ At a symposium in Salt Lake City last Friday, Margaret Busse of the Department of Commerce explained that Utah made big strides in AI regulation to keep technology safe. The state built on a $100 million investment and passed the first AI bill in 2024—this effort will guide future rules on companion AI and deepfakes. Deseret News

- ➤ A University of Utah Health study found that many refugees in Utah face high food insecurity as they lose food aid when starting low-paying jobs—up to 85% of those interviewed reported not having enough healthy food. The study calls for clearer communication on food programs to help lower health care costs and improve access to good food. Deseret News

- ➤ Ben Lomond alum Cayson VanBeekum set a school record in his Oregon Tech debut by shooting 14-under with rounds of 65, 68 & 69 as he pulled ahead of Eddie Tache from Walla Walla and led his team to a second-place finish.
