Good morning, Provo. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 13th of September.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Thursday, as the valley marked the 9/11 anniversary, hundreds of volunteers completed 93 service projects at Family Haven and other local sites as part of UnitedWay’s Day of Caring—an event that came amid the recent murder of local activist Charlie Kirk near UVU. The service united community members in Orem and Lehi as they supported one another in a difficult time.  Daily Herald

CRIME NEWS

  • Ava Beck, a UVU student, said she felt in panic when two students evacuated her Spanish class during the shooting involving Charlie Kirk—leaving many stranded outside—and she has petitioned for improved emergency alerts using the PA system instead of delayed texts and emails.  FOX 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Friday, Rep. Burgess Owens and Rep. Tim Walberg led a roundtable at MACU offices in Sandy where local stakeholders explained that the Working Families Tax Cut Act will eliminate taxes on tips and overtime—boosting earnings for restaurant workers and small businesses in Utah. The law, valued at $5 trillion over 10 years, will give hard-working Utahns extra income to reinvest in the local economy.  Deseret News
  • Gov. Spencer Cox spoke today from Orem urging Americans to lower violent language after a suspect linked to Charlie Kirk’s death was arrested—he warned that returning hate with hate deepens the crisis and called on all to embrace peaceful change.  FOX 13

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials say that after the alleged shooter was taken into custody, therapists and counselors in Springville have seen social media echo chambers narrowing viewpoints—where online content may deepen radical ideas—and they urge parents to guide their children toward diverse opinions.  FOX 13
