- ➤ Utah officials report a rise in fires, drownings, and off-road vehicle crashes on public lands this summer and warn residents to wear safety equipment—such as life jackets—and follow fire restrictions as Labor Day weekend draws near. Standard-Examiner
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Former BYU baseball pitcher Candon Dean Dahle, 22, was sentenced in Fremont County for felony injury to a child charges after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a minor between ages 7 and 12—he received a suspended prison term of 5 to 10 years, 8 years probation, a 180-day local jail sentence, and 200 hours of community service. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Provo City is taking steps to prevent mudslides from the Buckley Draw Fire burn scar on Buckley Mountain by placing cement barriers along Nevada Avenue – near the church to block potential debris flow in the vulnerable development area. Developers will extend the existing debris channel with extra check dams, and the project is expected to be completed by next year to reduce risks from heavy rain. Daily Herald

- ➤ On Monday, Judge Dianna Gibson ruled that the old congressional map cannot be used and gave Utah leaders 30 days to produce a new map for the 2026 elections. At a Friday hearing, attorneys debated deadlines and requested a stay to use the 2021 map pending appeals — lawmakers now plan special sessions to meet the new requirements. Deseret News
