GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State officials and private partners signed a memorandum of understanding yesterday to search for a site for a Natrium reactor and energy storage system as part of Gov. Spencer Cox’s Operation Gigawatt— a plan to double Utah’s energy production by the end of 2025. The Utah Office of Energy Development, TerraPower, and Flagship Companies will evaluate potential sites based on factors like community support, physical attributes, licensing feasibility, and available infrastructure.  Deseret News
  • The Institute for Free Speech reported that Utah earned a perfect grade on anti-SLAPP protections—laws that stop meritless lawsuits aimed at silencing speech—and praised the state's 2023 Uniform Public Expression Protection Act.  Deseret News
  • State agencies say that starting fiscal year 2027, Utah taxpayers will pay about $13 million more for food stamp administration—while changes to Medicaid may save nearly $33 million but might cause thousands of Utahns to lose health coverage.
