CULTURE NEWS

  • The Provo Community Congregational United Church of Christ has been awarded a matching grant from the city Certified Local Government Program to fund urgent restoration work on its historic building, including repairs to the stucco exterior. • Scouting in Utah has changed since the Church ended a 105-year partnership in 2019 & local troops now include more girls and youth from diverse communities while camp programs continue to offer merit badge lessons. Leaders say troop membership sharply dropped at first but has grown again as local groups now operate with more freedom.  Deseret News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Great Salt Lake advocates are worried about a dry winter as early forecasts point to below-normal precipitation and a return of La Niña—BYU ecologist Ben Abbott warned that low snowpack runoff following a very dry summer could drop the lake into a critical range. The forecast means Utah must act quickly to conserve water and secure inflows for a healthier lake.  Deseret News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rocky Mountain Power proposed building a 45-mile transmission line from Spanish Fork to Eagle Mountain to add capacity and boost reliability while residents in Salem Park raised concerns about inadequate notice and potential impacts; a Utah County planning commission will review the project Tuesday, August 19 at 5:30 p.m.—and right-of-way acquisition will continue into next year before construction begins in summer 2026.  Daily Herald
