Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 14th of August.
Good morning, Provo.
📰 Economy
On Thursday, SBA and World Trade Center Utah announced $743,000 in trade expansion funds to help local businesses reach new international markets.
The grant will support export training, travel, and marketing and is 42% higher than last year's allocation + it aims to open new global opportunities.
🏥 Health
Doctors and health officials are urging parents to vaccinate children as school begins amid reports of measles cases and wastewater data suggesting undiagnosed infections.
Local health departments, pharmacies, and clinics offer easy access to vaccines (even for underinsured families), so it is important to get vaccinated as weather cools.
🏈 Sports
At BYU’s team photo day, head coach Kalani Sitake said his past comments on program resources will be set aside as he focuses on getting better support for the players; he also mentioned the hiring of Kentucky’s Marc Hill as deputy athletic director (noting his strong reputation).
Venture capitalist Josh Kushner and former Disney CEO Bob Iger will buy the Lakers for $12.5B, potentially raising NBA team values including the Utah Jazz.
Owner Ryan Smith bought the Jazz for $1.66B in 2020, and the team’s worth over $4B may near $5B as new sales drive comps higher.
