COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lorene Moore, a resident of Elk Ridge, became the new executive director of the Spanish Fork-based Candy Bomber Foundation — a charity that honors Gail Halvorson’s legacy — and she will lead new STEM and aviation programs with events planned on Sept. 20 and Sept. 29.  Daily Herald

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Wildfires are burning in Utah as Gov. Cox issued an emergency order that starts Stage 2 fire restrictions Friday (banning open campfires and smoking) to help protect lives and homes. Firefighters are working on 721 fires that have burned 141,000 acres, including a large fire near Richfield that started on July 13 and destroyed several homes, and officials say more funds will be needed as the season goes on.  Deseret News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Provo City's Public Works Department proposed a $120 water tax credit for urban farmers who grow marketable plants in a garden covering at least 25% of their property or 5,000 square feet and using high efficiency irrigation for at least 4 months each season + the proposal, discussed at the City Council meeting on August 5th, will grant the credit to qualifying residents if they meet all criteria by December.  KUTV
  • A federal judge ruled in favor of Singularism—a religious group that uses psychedelic mushrooms—by halting the criminal case against its founder and allowing its lawsuit against Provo City and Utah County to proceed. The judge said the charges were brought in bad faith and that the ruling tests the protections offered by Utah’s new Religious Freedom Restoration Act.  Deseret News
