COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Over the weekend, a brush fire tore through a field near a development in Vineyard and nearly reached several homes before neighbors—including NFL player Danny Sorensen—helped contain the flames; the Utah County Sheriff’s Office confirmed no homes were damaged and fire crews continued monitoring the area while investigating the cause.  FOX 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Utah governor Spencer Cox signed a 30-day state of emergency on July 31 to unlock state resources after 712 fires burned 135,899 acres statewide; the Monroe Canyon Fire near Richfield has burned nearly 59,000 acres and remains 4% contained, prompting officials to warn residents to stay cautious—fire danger remains extremely high.  Daily Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • Tiger Bachmeier, a Stanford computer science graduate and former Cardinal wide receiver, transferred to BYU and said during fall camp he was ready to earn his spot on the team—he will start his MBA program in September and plans to work hard on football and academics with NFL hopes in mind.  Deseret News
  • Frank Layden, the longtime Jazz coach and team president known for helping others, passed away a month ago at age 93. Friends recall his wisdom and kindness—he guided careers like Jerry Howarth’s and always looked for ways to give back to our sports community.  Deseret News
  • BYU’s Kenneth Rooks and Lexy Lowry won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the U.S. championships Saturday afternoon; Rooks ran 8:26.58 and Lowry finished in 9:09.14—both earning spots for the World Championships in Tokyo this September.  Deseret News
