ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Representatives Celeste Maloy and Burgess Owens asked U.S. trade officials to review a tariff rate quota on lamb imports from Australia and New Zealand (lamb imports grew over 500% in volume and over 2000% in value since 1994) to help protect Utah's sheep farmers. They said domestic production has dropped more than 60% (with over 70% of lamb sold coming from abroad) and local ranchers now face rising costs and supply chain challenges. Deseret News
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Utah Lake Authority warned Thursday that harmful algae were found in Utah Lake after water quality checks and satellite images confirmed a lakewide bloom. Residents should avoid swimming, wading, or drinking the water, while motorized boating remains allowed and officials noted that these blooms happen annually. Deseret News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Lt. Gov. Henderson provided Utah’s public voter list and data on removals—including 4,225 for felony convictions—from November 2022 to November 2024 after the DOJ requested information to check compliance with federal law. She said Utah uses a robust process for maintaining voter rolls and will upgrade its election system by early 2027. ABC4

- ➤ Real Salt Lake defeated Club América on July 30 at America First Field in Sandy when the game ended 2-2 in regulation and went to a shootout. Goalkeeper Rafael Cabral stopped three penalties (helping RSL win the shootout 3-1) to secure the Leagues Cup opener victory. Deseret News
- ➤ At the 2025 preseason training camp first practice on July 30 in Provo, BYU showed that freshman Bear Bachmeier earned as many reps as seasoned QBs Treyson Bourguet and McCae Hillstead as they competed to replace departing Jake Retzlaff. Coach Kalani Sitake said there is no set starter yet and the team will review film soon — the quarterback battle remains wide open. Deseret News
