- ➤ Douglas Carter, a 69-year-old former death row inmate who spent 40 years in state prison, was ordered on Tuesday to be moved to the Utah County Jail to await a new trial for the killing of Eva Olesen—prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty and motions are set for a Sept. 2 hearing. - ➤ A new report warns that data centers planned for the arid West will need huge amounts of water and electricity—by 2035, some sites could use up to 7 billion gallons of water yearly, potentially raising energy bills for local users. Utah lawmakers already passed a measure that lets power companies work in a competitive space so that new loads do not burden current customers, and experts say smart policies must guide sustainable practices. - ➤ On Tuesday, July 22, 2025, state leaders and wildlife workers inspected new automated box traps in Provo Bay at Utah Lake to reduce invasive carp and protect the June sucker fish. The traps lure carp with cracked corn and add a summer tool to an effort that previously removed 32 million pounds of carp from the lake—officials said the new method could work when traditional netting struggles. - ➤ Sandy Fire Department Deputy Chief Michael Bullock said residents who buy fireworks must travel about 1.5 miles west to legal discharge areas—online maps from local agencies mark approved spots.
