CRIME NEWS

  • Five Utahns and one Washington resident pleaded guilty to charges in a $100M fraudulent supplement scheme that misled consumers with false endorsements and deceptive sales tactics using sham storefronts — some defendants now await sentencing while others have had charges dismissed.  Deseret News

CULTURE NEWS

  • One hundred and seventy-eight years ago this week, 143 men led by Brigham Young began a grueling 1,031-mile trek from Winter Quarters to the Great Salt Lake—facing discipline when off-task behavior threatened their survival and mission. Their challenging march later paved the way for more pioneers to settle and grow the local legacy.  Deseret News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Utah lawmakers passed SB62 to form the Spaceport Exploration Committee which will study the feasibility of a local space launch facility and hold its first meeting on July 28—state leaders seek to boost a growing aerospace and defense industry that makes 20 percent of the economy—and local companies, like OxEon Energy, are testing new fuel and oxygen technology.  Deseret News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Nate Mortensen, CEO of Open Sky Drone Light Shows, has promoted drone shows as a safer alternative to fireworks for Pioneer Day to reduce wildfire risks (by avoiding open flames and human error). Lexi Tuddenham of HEAL Utah said that avoiding fireworks may lessen air pollution by preventing heavy metal exposure and related health problems.  FOX 13

  • BYU's board of trustees has directed a unique approach for its sports programs, with President Shane Reese saying teams must stay true to the university's spiritual mission and focus on student development rather than just financial gain— an approach meant to keep the Cougars competitive and distinct.  Deseret News
