CULTURE NEWS

  • The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints reported record convert baptisms from July 2024 to June 2025 (with 308,000 converts in 2024 and nearly 40,000 reengagement baptisms) during a briefing at the Provo Missionary Training Center. Elder Quentin L. Cook (of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles) said new members now attend weekly services at higher rates.  ABC4

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Provo City Council amended the Nuisance Abatement Ordinance on Tuesday to give police new power to issue notices and impose fines on property owners with chronic nuisance issues – defined by five emergency calls in 90 days or 10 in a year – if they fail to make required improvements like installing cameras, lighting, or hiring security.  KUTV
  • Provo Mayor Michelle Kaufusi said Slate Canyon land is not for sale as Splash Summit Waterpark’s early expansion plans that would include new retail, housing, and a hotel cannot proceed without her approval. She emphasized that city-owned land will remain public (the water park’s future development remains unclear).  Deseret News

  • During Big 12 Media Days in Frisco, Texas, BYU running back LJ Martin said he supported the honor code because he believed that living by Christ’s example was part of the university’s values — his comments followed questions about how the code guides student-athletes — and he stressed that the standard applies to everyone in the program.  Deseret News
