COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Organizers of this year’s Stadium of Fire have removed self-propelled fireworks—those that injured 26 people last year during a military flyover—and enlisted a new vendor while Provo Fire Marshal Lynn Schofield confirmed his team inspected the equipment several times this week; nearly 50,000 people are expected to attend today’s sold-out event featuring country band Rascal Flatts, fireworks and a drone show.  Deseret News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brandon Sanderson, a well-known Utah writer, will be the main speaker at StoryCon 2026, the state’s largest writing event. The conference will be held Feb. 27-28 at the Salt Palace Convention Center, where he will speak, sign books, and share his new work — Isles of the Emberdark.  Deseret News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Advocates for Utah’s low-income residents and seniors say a federal budget bill passed Tuesday will cut Medicaid and SNAP funds — putting vulnerable people at risk of losing essential care. Protesters gathered outside representative offices as lawmakers plan to vote on the bill before Friday.  Deseret News
  • Today, Gov. Spencer Cox told a crowd at the state Capitol that the founders meant the pursuit of happiness to mean self-improvement, responsibility & sacrifice rather than simply seeking pleasure. He credited Utah’s strong values in community, charity and religion for supporting his view.  Deseret News
  • State fire officials say fireworks can be used in Utah on July 2–5 and July 22–25 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.—on July 4 and July 24 the time goes to midnight—but fireworks are banned on state and federal lands and unincorporated areas because of fire rules. Officials warn that high wildfire danger and dry conditions mean everyone must follow maps and have water or a fire extinguisher ready to prevent wildfires.  Deseret News

  • BYU football lost quarterback Jake Retzlaff when he chose to transfer last weekend instead of facing a suspension, and coach Kalani Sitake said team leaders like Jack Kelly and Isaiah Glasker are stepping up to fill the gap. He added that keeping the coaching staff intact — a move that supports a strong team identity—will help guide the Cougars through a challenging season.  Deseret News
