Good morning, Provo. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 25th of June.
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ A study from WalletHub ranked Utah as the most independent state based on low government benefit dependency, a 3.2% unemployment rate, and a median income above $88,500 — factors that show strong financial and social independence. Fewer residents rely on public assistance, which helps maintain Utah’s overall robustness. ABC4
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Governor Cox said on Tuesday that he supports Sen. Lee’s revised public lands proposal if it remains narrowly focused on selling only BLM land within 5 miles of cities for affordable housing—he warned that earlier drafts were too broad and risked public misunderstanding. Deseret News
- ➤ Fireworks have been on sale since June 24 in Utah as state and local officials added new rules after wildfires damaged homes and land in the south; the fireworks may be used only on eight specific days in July and violations can incur a $1,000 fine. Gov. Spencer Cox urged residents to choose professional displays over setting off personal fireworks (fireworks are banned on federal, state, and unincorporated lands) to lessen fire risks. KUTV
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ University of Utah biochemist Wesley Sundquist's research led to the creation of lenacapavir — an HIV prevention drug approved by the FDA last week that will be sold as Yeztugo — which protects users for six months. He said researchers will keep working to develop a vaccine that offers even broader protection. Deseret News
