CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A 39-year-old Clearfield fashion designer and former Project Runway contestant died at a No Kings protest in Salt Lake City when a peacekeeping team member accidentally shot him while trying to stop a man with a rifle+he was celebrated for his Pacific Islands art and leaves behind a wife+two young children. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A recent poll found that 50% of Utahns prefer the old automatic mail-in voting process, while lawmakers revised the system so voters must opt in for a ballot once every eight years. Lawmakers said the new process—set to take effect in 2029—will add extra ID steps to balance security with convenience. Deseret News
- ➤ On Monday, Utah joined 54 other states in signing a $7.4 billion settlement with Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family to fight the opioid crisis. The state will receive $57 million from the deal to support its opioid task force—complementing additional funds from earlier settlements aimed at reducing drug-related harm. Deseret News

- ➤ A new analysis by Realtor.com shows Utah ranked No. 4 among states for investor-owned homes with 18% of sales in 2024—0.3% higher than in 2023. Investors target affordable properties as individual buyers face challenges entering home ownership and a bill to slow investor purchases did not pass in the 2025 legislative session. Deseret News

- ➤ BYU is hoping to attract top-ranked QB Ryder Lyons, who visited last week after cancelling his USC trip and is ranked among the top three QBs in the class of 2026—he has close family ties to NFL star Steve Young. - ➤ American Fork’s CJ Mascaro, who led his team to a state championship with a .407 batting average and solid pitching, was named the 2025 Deseret News Mr. Baseball and will join TCU in July — a step toward his dream of playing in the MLB. Deseret News
- ➤ Utah skier Racer Tom Hart broke his Guinness World Record by skiing 11,419,961 vertical feet this season—achieving the milestone across Snowbasin and Mammoth—and he will submit his total to Guinness next week.
