EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ University of Utah President Taylor Randall visited BYU on June 13th to share a scoop of BYU Creamery ice cream and build relationships with local leaders—he wore a Ute crimson polo and enjoyed In-Shanely Chocolate. He also toured the Camp Williams headquarters project that is set to open in 2026 and will start planning how to use nearby Fort Douglas for future campus expansion. Deseret News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Residents in Orem launched a referendum after a narrow 4-3 city council vote on May 13 to decide the future of Wilkerson Farm, a 14-acre property proposed for housing with room for 50 homes. Signature gathering began on June 13—supporters say the farm is a vital open space while opponents argue rezoning is needed to increase affordable housing. Deseret News
- ➤ Feeding America says nearly 500,000 Utahns struggle with food access and a federal budget bill under review could cut SNAP benefits for over 30,000 residents—shifting an extra $33 million in costs to the state while food pantries face increased demand. Lawmakers have not yet detailed if the cost will be offset by tax hikes or budget cuts. KUTV

- ➤ Andrew Gentry signed with BYU after he reopened his recruitment, saying he wanted to join a winning team (he turned down the Cougars twice before). The former Michigan lineman, who played 26 games last season, said Coach Sitake’s call confirmed his decision to pursue national championships with BYU. Deseret News
