CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A hearing on Tuesday began moving forward preparations for a second trial for former death row inmate Douglas Carter after his conviction was reversed in May for aggravated murder—public defenders are finalizing contracts and prosecutors are reviewing discovery while a motion is filed to transfer him from prison, with the next hearing scheduled for June 24. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A survey from the Utah Valley Earth Forum recognized Provo, Orem, Lehi, and Lindon for strong work in keeping the environment and human health safe (Provo had 18, Lehi 19, Lindon 15, and Orem 12 activities). The survey, run yearly since 2012, shows rising environmental efforts among Utah County cities. Daily Herald
- ➤ State leaders reported that Great Salt Lake reached a peak of 4,193.6 feet—about 1½ feet below last year’s level—and warned that a hot, dry summer could drop it into a range that harms local industry and recreation. Officials are monitoring dust events and water use, and lawmakers set new guidelines to protect the lake’s health. Deseret News
