Good morning, Provo.
Family and friends gathered Saturday at Springville High School baseball field to remember Alex Johnson, a 38-year-old youth leader who died Thursday morning in his trailer at Wasatch Mountain State Park during a church camping trip—official cause of death is pending investigation.
The Utah Board of Higher Education approved public universities’ reallocation plans to cut inefficient courses and programs to free up $60 million for priority fields such as engineering, AI and nursing.
The plan — which includes layoffs and course cuts — will be implemented over three years while some decisions remain conditional pending Congress's budget review.
An annual Kids Count report shows that Utah ranked 4th in child well-being with progress in reducing poverty and engaging youth, even though a quarter of children lived in homes where more than 30% of income went to housing and fewer fourth-graders met reading proficiency.
The report noted that reading and math skills and affordable housing need more attention by state leaders — key issues for our future.
A Gallup study shows that over 90% of Americans say math skills are important but many feel they did not learn enough practical math, such as financial and data science, in school—many wish they had a math do over.
Utah students score high on math assessments and must take a financial literacy course, making the state No. 1 in financial literacy education.
The 2025 Big 12 football season will feature 10 key games including an opener in Dublin, Ireland and a rivalry game between Utah and BYU on Oct.
