CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Deepa Bharath from the AP reported on Utah's surprising religious diversity as she described Latter-day Saints using yoga for both physical and spiritual health and a Hindu temple in Spanish Fork that brings together locals (including young volunteers learning about another faith). Her work shows that Utah's faith landscape is much more varied than many expect. Deseret News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Brigham Young University was added to Russia’s undesirable list on Feb. 6 — a decision that bans the school from operating in Russia and risks up to six years in prison for affiliated individuals. The move affects BYU’s Russian language program and study abroad trips to Russia — forcing the university to reassess its international activities. FOX 13
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Gov. Spencer Cox and his wife Abby announced Family Connection Week from June 9th to 15th to encourage families to set aside screens and spend quality time together. Child care professionals warn that too much screen time can delay speech, motor skills, and emotional growth—urging parents to limit device use at home. Deseret News
- ➤ After two travelers who visited Utah got measles, Health and Human Services said that 90% of residents are vaccinated and the agency has a plan if anyone gets sick (Dr. Leisha Nolen said the vaccine from childhood still works) (and officials are watching areas with lower vaccination rates). - ➤ The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that over 1,000 children died from being trapped in hot cars and noted a 35% rise in heatstroke deaths in 2024. Battalion Chief Mike Ishida explained that even mild heat can be deadly and urged calling 911 before using Utah’s Good Samaritan law—designed to protect rescuers who break into locked cars when children are in danger. - ➤ BYU signed men's basketball coach Kevin Young to a new contract on Thursday — the school said the deal will keep him in Provo for the foreseeable future after the team reached the Sweet 16 last season. Standard-Examiner
- ➤ Today the NHL is hosting its second annual Stanley Pup event to raise pet adoption awareness, and Utah Mammoth's Logan Drooly—a 14-week-old rescue puppy from Brandywine Valley SPCA named after player Logan Cooley—will compete on TruTV at 3:30 p.m. MDT; the event will also air on NHL Network at 5 p.m. MDT on Sunday. - ➤ David Huntsman of the Huntsman Family Foundation spoke at the Olympism365 Summit on June 5, saying Utah’s 2034 Winter Games will build programs to give athletes better mental health care—he said experts will work to create support that benefits athletes now and long after the Games.
