CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Today, Douglas Carter appeared in court in Provo as the case for a possible retrial of the 1985 murder of Eva Olesen moves forward—Judge Pullan declared him indigent and appointed the UCPDA, though they may not handle another capital case and questions about releasing key evidence to Provo Police remain. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Gov. Spencer Cox appointed Lonny Pehrson — a staffer for former Attorney General Sean Reyes — as the first director of the new Government Records Office to replace the seven-member panel. He will manage public records appeals and daily office operations during his four-year term. Deseret News
- ➤ Associate Chief Justice John Pearce is leaving the Utah Supreme Court to return to private practice and teaching; his last day is December 1 after 10 years on the court (including 3½ years as Associate Chief). The Appellate Nominating Commission will compile a list of seven candidates for Gov. Spencer Cox to choose a successor. Deseret News
