Good morning, Provo. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 25th of May.

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new poll conducted May 15 to 18 shows nearly 60% of Utah adults are concerned about a hantavirus outbreak linked to a cruise ship incident that killed three passengers. Urban residents express higher worry than suburban & rural communities, while experts advise precautions when cleaning rodent droppings.  Deseret News

SPORTS NEWS

  • A new Deseret News/Hinckley Institute poll shows 41% of Utahns tracked the Mammoth's first playoff run closely (12% very and 29% somewhat) against the Vegas Golden Knights earlier this month. The team will face the Avalanche in the Winter Classic at Rice-Eccles Stadium on Dec. 31, fueling local excitement.  Deseret News
  • Big 12 teams will feature 13 nonconference matchups in 2026 to reshape the league's image. BYU will host Notre Dame while Utah faces SEC Arkansas at home — key opportunities for local teams to build momentum ahead of the season.  Deseret News
  • BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier, who posted a 12-2 season with 3,033 passing yards and 517 rushing yards as a freshman, is on track to challenge Max Hall’s record as he leads the Cougars in tough Big 12 contests.  Deseret News
  • Debate grows over expanding college football playoffs from 12 to 24 teams, with sports officials and coaches warning the change could dilute competition. BYU and other strong teams that missed the current format might gain chances, though concerns persist over game mismatches and reduced late-season excitement.  Deseret News
  • BYU football coach Sione Po’uha is adding depth to the defensive line by securing commitments from recruits like Moa Havili, a Granger High star who recently committed and will visit on June 19, & Jeremiah Williams from Tustin. His approach aims to build NFL-caliber talent for a stronger defense.  Deseret News
