CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A civil lawsuit filed in Salt Lake City accuses BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff of sexually assaulting a woman at his home in November during a video game session—his attorney said he is factually innocent and he has not been charged. Deseret News
- ➤ Provo Police reviewed a civil suit alleging sexual assault by a BYU quarterback after a report on November 27th showed a similar account, and the department said its review found no actionable leads—police deny ever discouraging victims from coming forward. KUTV
- ➤ Local attorney Robb Jones explained that BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff’s case was filed as a civil lawsuit after a Salt Lake County woman accused him of battery, assault, and causing emotional distress — because the matter is based on each party’s word without clear third-party proof. He said the civil court’s lower proof standard may allow the woman to win damages while Retzlaff also faces a review by the school’s Honor Code Office. FOX 13

- ➤ Graduating seniors from Westlake High School celebrated by visiting former elementary schools—Thunder Ridge and Saratoga Shores—Wednesday afternoon where they walked through hallways with cheering sixth graders, teachers and family members. The event honored both the seniors and the graduating sixth graders and aimed to motivate younger students to work hard for their goals. Deseret News
- ➤ The Utah State Board of Education selected veteran educator Molly L. Hart as the next state superintendent of public instruction to replace Sydnee Dickson, who is set to step down next month. Hart — a board member and executive director of Summit Academy — won the 12 to 2 vote after a public interview with fellow finalist L. Ben Dalton. Deseret News

- ➤ The Utah Public Service Commission approved part of Rocky Mountain Power’s proposed rate increase late last month, setting bills to rise between 3.8% and 4.7%. The power company may ask for a rehearing by Sunday, and the commission chairman said the decision was made because some problems were due to the company’s own actions (raising residential bills by about $4.31 per month).
