Good morning, Provo. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 22nd of May.
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Many in Utah’s Venezuelan community, including an estimated 6,500 to 7,000 in the state, are worried after a Supreme Court decision upheld ending temporary protected status for nearly 350,000 people. Those affected fear they may lose work rights and face deportation unless they have pending asylum claims—some are even considering leaving the country. Deseret News
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ BYU athletic director Brian Santiago, hired on May 14, is tackling challenges like NCAA revenue sharing and NIL collectives while coordinating projects and donor efforts to improve sports facilities. He now needs to quickly select a dependable assistant (someone known to cut through red tape) to help manage the program’s growing demands. Deseret News
- ➤ College football recruiting expert Jeff Hansen (from 247Sports) said BYU coaches are more excited about attracting top talent and are competing neck-and-neck with Oregon and USC for promising players like five-star quarterback Ryder Lyons, who will begin campus visits in mid-June with a decision expected after his church mission in July. BYU also signed receiver Terrance Saryon (flipped his commitment from Washington), which shows the program can now draw talent from both local and out-of-state pools. Deseret News
