CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Orem man Eric Whitaker, 41, was arrested on Friday after Provo police said he brandished a gun near Provo Towne Centre and later a search warrant on his apartment uncovered 71 homemade incendiary devices plus bomb-making materials that displaced nearby residents, leaving him held without bail as he faces multiple charges for weapons of mass destruction. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Officials confirmed on Monday morning that the petition to cancel HB267 has 146,480 valid signatures, meeting the 8% requirement in 15 Senate districts to appear on the 2026 ballot. Opponents may still request removals until May 7, and if any district falls below the needed count then the petition will not go on the ballot. Deseret News
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Utah public health officials warned residents to use care when cleaning out garages and sheds since hantavirus—a rare but deadly illness spread by rodent droppings and urine—can be triggered by disturbing these areas. They advised airing out buildings, using a disinfectant spray on droppings, and not sweeping to reduce the risk of inhaling dangerous particles. Deseret News
