CULTURE NEWS

  • Filming for Season 5 of 'The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives' resumed in Utah without Taylor Frankie Paul, who has stepped away to focus on her mental health (following production delays). The show will continue while she takes time to recover.  Deseret News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At BYU’s 150th commencement on April 23 at the Marriott Center, 6,864 degrees were conferred, and Elder Soares & President Reese noted that a record 91% of seniors reported growth in faith while urging graduates to build on their covenants and serve others.  Deseret News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Central Utah Water Conservancy District approved its first-ever drought resolution this week as the record-dry spring affected Provo Canyon. District leaders stressed education & offered up to 3 dollars per sqft in incentives to encourage water-wise landscaping amid severe conditions.  KUTV
  • The Utah Division of Water Resources warned that due to a lack of winter runoff, statewide streamflow will be about 50% below normal this summer, leaving smaller reservoirs struggling despite larger ones holding 72% capacity. County leaders are urged to review drought contingency plans (for local water restrictions).  FOX 13

HEALTH NEWS

  • During the Boston Marathon trip, a Lehi family became stranded after Amber Bonney delivered baby James 10 weeks early, leaving him in the NICU but doing well. The family is using Airbnbs & Ronald McDonald House housing assistance & plans to stay in Boston until James can go home.  KUTV
  • Health officials are hosting a national DEA-backed prescription drug take-back day on Saturday, Apr. 25 at over 100 local sites + last fall, more than 10,000 pounds of unused medications were turned in to help combat opioid addiction.  FOX 13

SPORTS NEWS

  • BYU freshman star AJ Dybantsa declared for the NBA Draft and will enter June’s selection process. He set scoring records at BYU in Provo + is projected to be a top overall pick.  Deseret News
  • University of Utah standout Spencer Fano was selected by the Cleveland Browns with the ninth overall NFL Draft pick on Thursday night; the Spanish Fork native, a decorated offensive tackle, is expected to strengthen the team’s offensive line for the upcoming season.  KUTV
  • Caleb Lomu, a top offensive lineman from Utah, was picked 28th overall by the New England Patriots in Thursday night’s NFL Draft — a historic moment as he and another Ute became first-round picks.  KUTV
  • Utah’s 2034 Winter Games will rely on private funding to cover the $4 billion tag, with $250 million pledged by local donors + $460 million in contingency funds. Organizers signed an agreement making taxpayers liable only for shortfalls and are working with the IOC on cost-saving technology adjustments.  Deseret News
