COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Firefighters are getting calls to leave for wildfires earlier than usual as dry weather raises risk in Utah. Lone Peak Fire District crews train hard and check gear carefully (including out-of-state calls from Texas and Nebraska) to be ready when needed.  KUTV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A side-by-side price check shows that Provo shoppers can save with bulk buying at Costco, which is about $4 cheaper overall, while Walmart offers lower prices on eggs, milk, and shrimp. Savings at Costco depend on bulk purchases and a membership fee ($65/yr).  KUTV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • QTS Data Centers is constructing the SLC1 campus in Eagle Mountain and topped out its third building, expected to create 2,000 construction jobs and 100 permanent roles using a closed-loop cooling system (designed to avoid local water use) amid local drought concerns.  KUTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Provo City School District is considering closing four elementary schools including Spring Creek, Franklin, Amelia Earhart, and Canyon Crest due to declining enrollment and budget shortfalls; community meetings are scheduled with one at Spring Creek Elementary today at 6 p.m. to discuss alternatives.  FOX 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A WalletHub study shows Utah is the least gambling-addicted state because of its strict constitutional ban, and a new law banning proposition bets will take effect in May - officials say the measure is designed to reduce gambling-related harms in the community.  Deseret News

  • Utah health officials reported over 600 active measles cases with 75 reported this April — public health experts noted a decline in diagnoses over the past three weeks and emphasized vaccination to prevent further spread.  KUTV
