CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Today, the trial of Kent Cody Barlow began in a Provo courtroom as he faces two counts of first-degree felony murder for the May 2022 deaths of two toddlers when his car hit a corral and its roof collapsed (he is also charged with controlled substance use). FOX 13
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Xiaocheng Ai— a senior from Corner Canyon High School— was named the 2025 Deseret News/KSL General Sterling Scholar for computer technology and received a $5,000 scholarship at the award ceremony held at the Conference Center Little Theater in Salt Lake City yesterday. She said the honor motivates her to work even harder as she prepares to study computer science at Stanford. Deseret News
- ➤ Governor Spencer Cox signed HB100 on Tuesday to let students who qualified for reduced-price lunches get free meals starting July 1. The law provides a one-time $2.5-million payment, stops schools from singling out students who cannot pay, and will help about 40,000 children facing food insecurity. Standard-Examiner
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Utah transportation officials announced Wednesday that 152 new road projects worth nearly $1.7B will start in 2025 while 145 projects already in progress work to improve roads across the state. The plan includes a $53.1M widening of U.S. 189 in Provo Canyon—expected to finish in winter—aimed at easing traffic. Deseret News
- ➤ A coalition of 20 unions called Protect Utah Workers gathered 320,000 signatures on April 16th to meet and double the 141,000 needed to trigger a referendum to repeal HB267— a law that stops public unions from collective bargaining starting July 1st. County clerks now have 21 days to verify the signatures before a 45-day period opens during which voters can withdraw their support. Standard-Examiner
- ➤ More than 95% of Provo residents have a REAL ID marked with a gold star—this shows they are ready to meet the May 7 requirement for boarding flights and visiting federal buildings. The Department of Public Safety advises those who need a REAL ID to check the required documents and schedule an appointment. FOX 13
