CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ News that Sundance will move to Boulder in 2027 has hit Utah's film scene hard. Marshall and Michelle Moore, owners of the Zions Indie Film Fest in Orem, plan to grow the festival to attract new audiences and support local filmmakers — even as other independent film events work to fill the gap. ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ State leaders met Tuesday at the governor’s mansion to celebrate Utah being ranked first for the best economic outlook for the 18th year—a ranking based on recent tax cuts and strong economic policies that officials say have boosted growth and incomes. The ALEC report reviewed 15 key factors like tax rates, employment, and GDP and showed that Utah grew faster than most states. Deseret News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Utah Gov. Spencer Cox signed five education bills at Davis Technical College on April 14 to support programs such as charter school funding, a new credential program, enhanced civics education, a grant for catalyst centers, and a statewide talent portal. He said the bills — brought forward from local requests and backed by sufficient funding — show strong support for education innovation. Daily Herald
- ➤ Utah Valley University closed its Center for Intercultural Engagement and cut a few full-time positions as it shifted $8.9 million from its next budget to meet new state law requirements—employees received severance packages and support as the school focused on its Student Success Center. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Governor Spencer Cox signed House Bill 100 on Tuesday to expand free school lunches to more students in Provo. Rep. Tyler Clancy authored the bill which raised the income threshold for a family of five from $49,000 to about $70,000 for the upcoming school year — a move designed to ease childhood hunger —. FOX 13
- ➤ Utah Rep. Blake Moore introduced the Adoption Tax Credit Refundability Act—aimed at removing the financial barriers to adoption—to let low- and middle-income families receive full tax credit refunds. Lawmakers say the change will help offset fees and encourage more adoptions of children from foster care. Deseret News
- ➤ State, county and city leaders broke ground Monday on a three-year project to expand Provo Airport from 4 to 10 gates. The project, which includes a 78 million-dollar commitment from Utah County, will expand the apron by November—opening new gates in late 2028 and boosting regional travel options. Deseret News
