COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Elder Matthew S. Holland, a former UVU president and church leader, and his wife, Sister Paige Holland, received the 2025 Pillar of the Valley Award on April 9 at the Utah Valley Convention Center—Nathan Ricks also received a posthumous award after his plane crash on Dec.30 that left his passengers safe.  Deseret News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • BYU is working on opening its new medical school and is preparing to submit over 1,000 pages of planning documents to the medical education committee by Aug. 1. If they finish on time and earn approval, it will welcome its first students as early as fall 2027—supported by more than 150 volunteers.  Deseret News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Water experts reported that despite northern reservoirs ending the water year nearly full, southern Utah recorded very low snow levels. They urged water users to conserve water in the coming months as warmer weather and uncertain runoff patterns may affect supplies—details shared at a recent Water Supply Outlook meeting.  Deseret News
  • A panel hosted by the Hinckley Institute discussed how the 2034 Winter Games can boost Utah’s efforts to improve air quality and protect the Great Salt Lake by following sustainability plans. Participants said reusing 2002 venues will lower emissions—while challenges like reduced natural snowfall at sites such as Soldier Hollow may require more manmade snow.  Deseret News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Utah law enforcement is cracking down on distracted driving this week as troopers use unmarked vehicles along the Wasatch Front to spot drivers brushing teeth—styling hair, eating, and texting—and issue citations up to $100 to prevent accidents. Officers will also work to educate drivers and reduce risky behavior on the roads.  Deseret News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Egor Demin announced Tuesday he is leaving BYU for the NBA draft, leaving the team without a true point guard and prompting coach Kevin Young to search for a replacement. Kevin Young said he supports Demin's decision and is watching rising senior Richie Saunders closely as he plans for next season.  Deseret News
  • Utah’s Tony Finau shot a 3-over 75 in his first round at Augusta National on Thursday after a tee shot on the 16th hole ended in water — he will tee off today at 11:45 a.m. Former BYU golfer Mike Weir also finished with a 3-over 75 and will start his round today at 9:10 a.m.  Deseret News
  • BYU point guard Egor Demin announced he will enter the NBA draft after one season at BYU and said he is ready for the next challenge in his basketball career. He said he will return to finish his degree after he starts playing professionally on June 25th + thanked his coaches and teammates for their support.  Deseret News
