CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Two Utahns — Tyler Thompson Jr. and Marcel Malanga — have been sent back to the United States after Congo changed their death sentences to life in prison for their role in a failed coup attempt last year; they will serve their sentences in the U.S. with help from the U.S. Embassy. KUTV
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Thanksgiving Point Tulip Festival begins today at Ashton Gardens in Lehi (9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Saturday) and runs until May 17, showcasing nearly 1 million spring flowers including 440,000 imported tulips and other varieties such as daffodils, hyacinths and poppies. The 50-acre event features live entertainment, vendors and classes (fee required) to attract visitors during the festival. Deseret News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Utah Attorney General Derek Brown announced on Monday a $335 million settlement with Mylan Inc. for marketing opioid products known to be prone to abuse — the funds will be paid out over nine years and add to previous litigation sums. Deseret News
- ➤ Officers began a weeklong covert operation yesterday at the Lehi Police Department to catch drivers using phones or engaging in other distractions. Seventeen agencies will cover nearly 200 shifts through April 14—officers will educate or cite violators to help curb the high number of crashes recorded last year. Daily Herald
- ➤ Utah law enforcement is increasing efforts to crack down on distracted driving by using a covert operation—employing unmarked vans to spot violators—and alerting marked officers; the initiative runs until April 14. The state reported 5,147 crashes in 2024 that caused nearly 1,900 injuries and noted that many incidents involved younger drivers. ABC4
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said on Monday he plans to ask the CDC to stop recommending fluoride in drinking water and is forming a task force of health experts to study its effects—additionally, the EPA announced it is reviewing new scientific data on fluoride risks while Utah law requires local water systems to end fluoridation by May 7. - ➤ The Huntsman Cancer Institute broke ground on its new Utah County campus in Vineyard on Tuesday — a project that will build a 272,000 square foot center on a 19-acre site to give cancer patients faster care. The $400M project is set to be finished by fall and will serve over 55,000 patient visits each year while expanding research and clinical trials. ABC4
