Good morning, Provo. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 4th of April.

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A survey of 800 Utah residents in summer 2024 showed that 57% believed water supplies would fall short of meeting demand 20 years from now, making water the state's second biggest concern behind housing and cost of living. The study by Envision Utah and state water groups also found that many mistakenly thought indoor water use wasted more water than outdoor irrigation —a fact that has spurred efforts for more waterwise landscaping and rebate incentives.  Deseret News
  • A group of BYU students from Professor Jane Day’s Make a Difference class worked with the U.S. Forest Service on March 29 to plant nearly 1,000 shrubs in Mapleton Canyon and restore an area cleared for water pipes. Senior Leslie Griffin led over 150 volunteers, including college students, youth groups and families, to reforest the canyon and improve erosion control—benefiting local wildlife.  Daily Herald
  • On Wednesday, sportsmen groups pledged a record $6.6 million for Utah’s Wildlife Restoration Initiative to fund projects such as fencing, prescribed burns and native seedling plantings that restore wildlife habitats. The program—started in 2006 and supported by federal agencies and volunteers—will improve watershed health and biological diversity statewide.  Deseret News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Spencer Cox signed eight crucial bills on Thursday aimed at enhancing public safety by addressing drug trafficking, sexual crimes, and homeless services—measures that include tougher fentanyl penalties, improved protections for vulnerable victims, and revised jail procedures.  Deseret News
  • At its April 3 meeting, the Utah State Board of Education rejected a request to adopt a resolution opposing DEI—citing concerns raised by hundreds of calls and emails from residents. The measure, which would have labeled DEI as Marxist and required schools to end related practices, failed by a 10-4 vote.  FOX 13
  • At the Utah State Board of Education meeting, five board members introduced a resolution to remove DEI practices from schools that drew support and intense criticism from community leaders. The board rejected the motion by a 10—4 vote, and one sponsor said she would continue to push for policies that ensure a discrimination-free education.  FOX 13
  • The Utah State School Board voted 4 to 10 to reject a motion to remove DEI initiatives from schools after members disagreed on its language—following hundreds of public emails, they said significant changes will be needed for any future proposal. No postponement measures passed, and the board did not schedule another vote on the issue.  ABC4

HEALTH NEWS

  • A confirmed measles case in Colorado on April 2nd led Utah health officials to closely monitor outbreaks in neighboring states, including cases in New Mexico and over 400 in Texas, and they advised residents to check their vaccination status. Officials said the risk remains very low for those immunized — and urged anyone unsure to consult a doctor.  ABC4
