Good morning, Provo. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 29th of March.

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A new poll of 609 Utah registered voters found that one-third had considered leaving because housing costs are too high, with 58% of those under 30 most likely to move. Although 56% said they were staying, state leaders stress the need to lower prices to keep young and new residents in the state.  Deseret News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Governor Spencer Cox signed HB81 to ban added fluoride in public drinking water systems, making Utah the first state to do so. The bill was signed amid worries about unsafe fluoride levels, with past incidents in Sandy (where an overfeed during a power surge sickened residents) highlighting the need for change.  Deseret News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Utah Gov Spencer Cox let a law banning most flags in classrooms and on government property become law after his 20-day review, saying it does not fix political neutrality in schools. The law will take effect on May 7 and allows only 12 kinds of flags to be shown while the state auditor will check any complaints.  Deseret News
  • Governor Spencer Cox signed a law that stops adding fluoride to public water systems—water managers must remove fluoridation equipment by May 7 and pharmacists can offer fluoride tablets to those who need them. The law affects about 1.6 million people and is the first statewide ban of its kind in the nation.  ABC4

HEALTH NEWS

  • Governor Cox signed H.B. 81 into law on Thursday that bans adding fluoride to public drinking water, making Utah the first state to take this action. The law will go into effect on May 7—residents who want fluoride for personal use can obtain it by prescription.  KUTV
